Strong Growth in the Indian Retail
Industry
The Indian retail industry accounts for over 10 per cent of the country’s Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) and around 8 per cent of the employment. It is among the largest emerging sector in the Indian Economy.
It has been estimated to be around USD600 billion in the year 2015, registering
a CAGR of 7.45 percent since 2000. The Retail industry is expected to grow to
USD1.3 trillion by the year 2020, registering a CAGR of 9.7 per cent between
2000-2020.

The revenues from the food &
grocery sector seem to be the largest in the Retail industry, followed by the
apparel.

The Retail scenario in India is
mostly unorganized and traditional in approach, creating huge gap for organized
retail to evolve. Organized Retail Penetration (ORP) in India is as low as 8
per cent, compared with that in other countries, like the US with 85
per cent in the FY2015. This
indicates strong growth potential for organized retail in India. Organized
retail in India witnessed a CAGR of 19-20 per cent. Organized retail is
expected to account for 24 per cent of the overall retail market by 2020.

E-commerce is expected to be the
next major area for Organized Retail growth in India. The E-Commerce Industry
is projected to touch USD100 billion by 2020 from USD22 billion in 2015. Due to
high growth potential of retail industry, India could achieve the status of one
of the most preferred destination for Foreign Direct Investors.
The
Retail industry thus create
ample amount of job opportunities (more than 20 million jobs) for the Indian
youths accompanied with handsome salary packages and lifestyle for the upcoming
years.
